Boston Asia YES Begins Production

I am happy to post these photos from Boston Asia YES. Trinh and Nicholas have begun working with their youth to create a series of video and animation projects. I was there to support them and help the participants think about "Creating with Purpose". They were as motivated and excited as the educators!

Happy New Year Boston AYV Sites!

This is a call for stories with the "Create With Purpose" theme in mind. Please share via this blog how your youth participants have created digital media based on the theme. For examples of media with a youth voice feel free to check out the AYV Youth Gallery, or the Media That Matters Film Festival web sites.

Slip of the Tongue (see above) is a favorite as well as A Girl Like Me.

Show students youth-produced work that shows how young people are making a difference in some way.
Ask students, "How do you think this work was made?" and introduce to them the various roles in production.
Brainstorm what they need to do/know to create their own projects.
Bring in experts in the specific roles they are interested in.
Acquire resources with youth media in mind. For example, EVC's "Hands-On: A Guide to Using Video and Multimedia Production in Project-Based Work".
Encourage youth to share their work through screenings, Web, etc. and please let us know when you do!

I am sharing with you one of the Flash animations created by a high school student of mine last August (most of you have seen this one):

They came up with this after watching Donnie Darko which goes to show just how much young people are inspired by the images/media they see. Imagine what they come up with based on what you show them.

*The youth also were able to point out some goofs in the shots/credits during the initial screening. Having an informal screening prior to the submission of youth media projects will reduce the amount of goofs, as well as give the youth producers feedback regarding the quality of the work.

This is the Current TV's Studio Survival Guide. You must have Flash player installed on your computer to experience the multimedia on the site. Current TV is a pet project of Al Gore, the former U.S. vice-President.

I often use this guide when teaching students 4-d, or time-based art. Students are required to create a story based on a theme and use equipment and software to either videotape or animate their story. The first projects are usually 2-3 minutes long.
